MDAC Malaysia Requirements – What You Need to Apply

MDAC Malaysia Requirements – What You Need to Apply

The Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) has specific requirements that every traveler must meet before arriving in Malaysia. Understanding what documents and information you need ensures a smooth registration process and trouble-free entry at Malaysian immigration. This guide covers all MDAC requirements for 2026.

Passport Requirements for MDAC

Your passport is the foundation of your MDAC application. Before starting the form, verify:

  • Validity: Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your planned arrival date in Malaysia
  • Condition: Passport must not be damaged, torn, or have missing pages
  • Machine-readable: Your passport must be machine-readable (all modern passports are)
  • Biometric chip: Required only for KLIA autogate use – not mandatory for standard MDAC

If your passport expires within 6 months of your arrival date, renew it before traveling to Malaysia. Immigration officers have the right to refuse entry even if your MDAC is completed.

Information Required to Complete MDAC

You will need to provide the following information when filling in the MDAC form:

Personal Information

  • Full name (exactly as in your passport – no abbreviations)
  • Date of birth
  • Nationality
  • Gender
  • Passport number
  • Passport expiry date
  • Country of issue

Travel Information

  • Arrival date in Malaysia
  • Entry point (KLIA, KLIA2, Penang International Airport, Johor Bahru CIQ, Kota Kinabalu Airport, or other)
  • Mode of travel (Air, Sea, or Land)
  • Flight/vessel/vehicle number
  • Purpose of visit (Tourism, Business, Education, Transit, Other)

Accommodation Details

  • Hotel name and full address, OR
  • Host’s full name and the property’s complete street address
  • First night’s accommodation if staying at multiple locations

Contact Information

  • Valid email address (for account creation and QR code delivery)
  • Mobile phone number (WhatsApp confirmation also sent)

Visa Requirements vs MDAC Requirements

MDAC is a separate requirement from a Malaysian visa. The requirements differ significantly by nationality:

  • Visa-free travelers (US, UK, EU, Australia, etc.): Only need MDAC – no visa application required
  • Visa-required travelers (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nigeria, etc.): Need both a valid Malaysian visa AND the MDAC
  • Singapore citizens: Need neither MDAC nor a visa

If your nationality requires a Malaysian visa, apply for it first (processing takes 3 to 7 business days), then complete your MDAC within 3 days before arrival.

Age Requirements

There is no minimum age for MDAC. All foreign nationals, including newborn infants, must have their own individual MDAC before entering Malaysia. Key points for families:

  • Every child, regardless of age, needs their own MDAC
  • A parent or guardian completes the MDAC on behalf of children using the child’s passport details
  • Each child receives their own QR code confirmation
  • A family of four needs four separate MDAC submissions
  • Children listed on a parent’s passport still need a separate MDAC in their own name

Technical Requirements

To complete the MDAC online, you need:

  • A device with internet access (computer, smartphone, or tablet)
  • A compatible browser – Google Chrome is recommended; Safari on iPhone may cause issues
  • VPN disabled – the JIM portal blocks many VPN IP addresses
  • A stable internet connection – mobile data may cause timeouts on some networks
  • Access to your email to verify your account and receive your QR code

Financial Declaration Requirement

MDAC itself has no financial requirements. However, travelers carrying cash or bearer negotiable instruments exceeding USD 10,000 equivalent must separately declare this to Malaysian Customs on arrival. This declaration is not part of the MDAC form – it is handled by customs officials at the entry point.

Submission Timing Requirements

MDAC must be submitted within a specific time window:

  • Latest: Before arriving at Malaysian immigration (same-day submission is technically allowed)
  • Earliest: 3 calendar days before your scheduled arrival date
  • Recommended: As soon as your 3-day window opens to avoid last-minute technical issues
What is the minimum passport validity for MDAC?

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your planned arrival date in Malaysia. If your passport expires within 6 months of travel, renew it before your trip – MDAC registration alone does not guarantee entry if your passport is close to expiry.

Can I use a one-way ticket to apply for MDAC?

You can complete MDAC with a one-way ticket – the form only requires your arrival details. However, Malaysian immigration officers may ask for proof of onward travel on arrival, especially if you are staying for an extended period. It is advisable to have at least a flexible return or onward ticket.

What accommodation details do I need for MDAC?

You need your first night’s accommodation name and full street address. Hotel bookings, Airbnb listings, or a host’s home address are all accepted. P.O. Box addresses are not accepted. If you receive an address format error, try entering the hotel or building name at the end of the address field.

Do I need to upload any documents for MDAC?

No. The MDAC form is a text-based registration – you do not need to upload any scanned documents, photos, or attachments. Simply fill in your details accurately and submit.

Can I complete MDAC if my travel plans are not confirmed?

You should only complete MDAC with confirmed travel plans – your arrival date, flight number, and first accommodation address must be accurate. Submitting with incorrect or placeholder information may cause problems at immigration. If your plans change after submitting, delete your MDAC and submit a new one with the corrected details.
